Where Black Oak starts and stops

Black Oak sits in the far southwest of Gary. 25th Avenue is its north edge, with Tolleston and Westside on the other side. Grant Street is the east edge. Its other edges meet the Town of Griffith and unincorporated Calumet Township.

The Borman Expressway (I-80/94) and the Little Calumet River run across the north side. Wetlands along both form a green belt, and inside it is Lake Etta County Park: 98 acres of floodplain on the north side of the Little Calumet, run by Lake County Parks, with fishing ponds and a pier.

A piece of Gary with a Hammond phone number

Black Oak wasn't always Gary. It was unincorporated until Gary annexed it in the 1970s, and before that it was loosely tied to Hammond. That's why homes here still have Hammond telephone numbers.

Roads we use for Black Oak pickups

  • Burr Street has the Borman exit closest to Black Oak.
  • Grant Street is the east edge, with its own I-80/94 interchange and shopping along it.
  • Ridge Road and Colfax Street meet at the other shopping area.
  • 25th Avenue is the north edge and the road that ties Black Oak to the rest of West Gary.

Pickup notes for Black Oak streets

Black Oak is mostly single-family homes, including many mobile homes. Some streets here don't have curbs, and some low spots hold water after a storm. We ask every seller the same questions, and here they matter a little more:

  • What's the car standing on? Grass, gravel or pavement. After heavy rain, grass and some lots stay soft.
  • How close can a truck get? A long driveway, a narrow lane or a gate is fine if we know about it.
  • Does it roll? Flat tires or a locked wheel on soft ground change how the car gets pulled out.

Next door

North across 25th Avenue are Tolleston and Westside. Brunswick is farther north, past the tracks. The West Gary blocks page has all four in one table.

If a car that isn't yours has been left on your Black Oak property, we can't buy it, but Indiana law gives you a way to have it removed. Read how the abandoned-vehicle rules work.

Questions

Is Black Oak really part of Gary?

Yes. Gary annexed Black Oak in the 1970s. Before that it was unincorporated and informally tied to Hammond, which is why the area still has Hammond telephone numbers.

My car is on grass behind the house. Can you still take it?

Yes. Tell us it's on grass and how close the truck can get. After a wet spell, mention it, because soft ground changes how the car gets pulled out.

Do you pick up near Lake Etta?

Yes. The streets around Lake Etta County Park are in Black Oak. Give us the nearest cross street when you send the form.
