Can you sell a car with body damage as it is?
Yes. A car with dents, crushed panels, broken glass or keyed paint can be sold as it is to a junk car buyer, with no repairs first. Describe the damage, say whether the car starts and rolls, and show that it's yours. The buyer tows it, so the damage doesn't have to be drivable.
What counts as body damage
For us, anything on the outside of the car:
- Dents and creases, from a parking-lot tap to a caved-in door
- Crushed or missing panels: fenders, bumpers, a hood that won't close
- Broken glass: windshield, side windows, mirrors
- Keyed or sprayed paint, the usual vandalism
- Rust holes and rotted rocker panels
Frame damage and deployed airbags count too. Tell us; neither one stops the sale.
What to tell us
The more specific you are, the fewer surprises at pickup:
| Tell us | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which panels or glass are damaged | So the offer matches the car |
| Whether it starts | Whether it runs can change the offer |
| Whether all four wheels roll | A bent wheel or a flat changes how it's loaded |
| Where it's parked, and on what surface | So the driver can plan the tow |
Repair it or sell it?
Body work isn't cheap, and on an older car the repair estimate can pass what the car is worth. If the damage came from vandalism, your insurer may cover some of it under comprehensive coverage, minus the deductible. Our vandalized car note lays out the fix, claim or sell decision step by step.
Our view: if the car was already near the end, and the estimate plus your deductible is close to what you'd ever get for it, sell it as it is and put the money toward the next car.
Before pickup
- Take out anything personal: glovebox, trunk, under the seats.
- Cover broken glass if rain is coming.
- Have the title ready. Missing? Indiana wants either the title or a BMV certificate of authority for a junk car, so tell us which papers you've got and we'll sort out the route on the call.
Missing keys too? See selling a car with no keys. Parts taken as well as damaged? See stripped cars.
