Where Tolleston starts and stops

Tolleston fills the middle of West Gary. The Norfolk Southern tracks run along its north edge, Grant Street closes the east side, 25th Avenue marks the south, and Clark Road is the line with Westside. Those four edges come from the City of Gary's 2008 comprehensive plan.

Two pieces inside it have names of their own. Tarrytown is the subdivision bounded by Clark Road, 15th Avenue, Whitcomb Street and 25th Avenue. Small Farms runs from Chase Street to Taft Street between 19th and 25th Avenue. If you tell us "Tarrytown" or "Small Farms," we know where you mean.

Tolleston is older than Gary itself. George Tolle platted it in 1857, when the railroads came through, decades before the steel mill and the city that grew around it.

Roads we use for Tolleston pickups

  • 11th Avenue and 15th Avenue are the two commercial streets, up in the northeast corner.
  • Clark Road runs the west edge and connects north toward Brunswick.
  • Grant Street runs the east edge and has an I-80/94 interchange to the south.
  • Burr Street gives the other nearby interchange with the Borman.
  • Whitcomb Street is the east side of Tarrytown.

Pickup notes for Tolleston streets

Most of Tolleston is single-family houses, so most cars we'd collect here are parked at the curb, in a driveway or in a back alley. A few things help the tow go smoothly:

  • Say which side of the street. On blocks off 11th and 15th, cars often sit nose to tail. The driver needs to reach the car from the curb.
  • Tell us if it blocks anything. An alley, a hydrant, a neighbor's driveway. It changes how the truck lines up.
  • Mention the surface. Pavement, gravel or grass behind the house. A car sitting on soft ground in spring is worth mentioning.
  • Tell us what's missing. Keys, wheels, a battery. None of that stops a sale, but the driver should know before arriving.

Near the parks (M.C. Bennett Park, Tolleston Park, Pachter Park, Tarrytown Playground) the streets are residential and quiet, which makes loading easy.

Next door

Tolleston shares Clark Road with Westside and 25th Avenue with Black Oak, just south. Brunswick sits on the other side of the tracks. For all four blocks in one table, see the West Gary blocks page.

Questions

Do you pick up in Tarrytown?

Yes. Tarrytown, the subdivision between Clark Road, 15th Avenue, Whitcomb Street and 25th Avenue, is part of Tolleston and inside the area we cover.

My car is parked on 11th Avenue. Is that a problem?

No. Tell us it's on 11th and which side of the street. If the car can be reached from a quieter side street, say so, because loading is easier away from traffic.

Can I sell a Tolleston car that doesn't run?

Yes. A car that won't start is a junk car, and junk cars are what we buy. Towing is free and you're paid at pickup.
